By now, all of AR is buzzing about last night's comment spam attacks.

But, hey, some of these are actually kind of interesting: Poetic, philosophical, if you will.

Friend, we hope to see you today at the Old L.A. Farmers Market-Highland Park's local farmers market. We're open every Tuesday, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Support your local economy by coming to the farmers market, talking to the farmers, talking to the craftspeople, and meeting your neighbors.

Be sure to come and bring the whole family and all your neighbors. We're located on Ave. 58 between Figueroa and Marmion Way, every Tuesday, year-round.

Have a seat, enjoy a tamale, chat with your neighbors, and get your fresh produce for the week. You'll also find used books, and lots of crafts.

Are these hard times worrying you? What better way to work our way through this than to network with neighbors, and find ways to cooperate to do things. Come meet your neighbors at the market!

(Parking is readily available in the city lot to the west, and elsewhere.) All the farmers are located on Avenue 58.

As he walked across the country from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in 1884 and 1885, Charles Lummis, learned of the plight of Native Americans, and he became determined to raise the public's awareness of Native American life and culture.

In 1907 he began planning the Southwest Museum, which opened seven years later, in 1914.

In recent years, however, the museum struggled financially. Its directors agreed in 2003 to merge with the Autry Museum in Griffith Park, an agreement that was to include the Autry making needed repairs to the Southwest Museum structures and the Autry underwriting the smaller museum's operating costs of more than $100,000 a month.

But as local activists watched, concern grew that the Autry's long term plan was to remove the priceless collection of artifacts out of the Southwest Museum, and into a newly expanded Griffith Park location, reducing the Southwest to nothing more than meeting rooms.

On June 30, both sides: Local activists, and Autry supporters met at Los Angeles City Hall for a showdown.

In a surprising development, City Councilman Jose Huizar said it was time for the Autry to reaffirm its commitment to the Southwest by agreeing to attach a legally binding document to a lease agreement the Autry is seeking in order to expand its Griffith Park Autry Museum.

Thus making the preservation of the Southwest collection at the Southwest Museum a condition of the city's approval of the Autry's expansion plans in Griffith Park.

Good move, Mr. Huizar, thank you.

Carlos Guitarlos

Almost five thousand people representing the rainbow of cultures in Northeast L.A gathered for Lummis Day 2009, the 4th celebration of the annual multi-cultural festival, presented by the Autry National Center, the Annenberg Foundation and the neighborhood councils of Northeast L.A.

The Lummis Day Festival was created to celebrate the patchwork of cultures that enriches the city. Artists represented Latino, Tagalog, Native American, Anglo and African-American traditions. Music included blues, rock, banda, salsa, jazz and country. Dance troupes represented Philippine, Mexican, Pacific Island and jazz dance traditions. Poets, painters and culinary artists, all with local connections, added to the Festival's collection of cultures.

Lummis Day takes its name from Charles Fletcher Lummis, who joined the L.A. Times as the newspaper's first city editor in 1876. A prolific writer and photographer, Lummis was also one of the city's first librarians, founded the Southwest Museum and helped introduce the concept of multi-culturalism to Southern California.

Opening night reception: Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 7-10 pm

The 3rd Zone is a space and place corralled by the Tijuana-San Diego border - the busiest and most utilized land crossing in the world. In 2005 over 18 million vehicles and 50 million people entered the 3rd Zone. The occupants of the Zone are a mix of people living in Tijuana, San Diego County and Los Angeles County.

The 3rd Zone masses are bombarded by huge glaring digital billboards inviting a captive audience to buy homes, cars, clothes, medical and plastic surgery services. Merchants and panhandlers compete for the attention of drivers, motorcyclists and walkers in limbo who have no where to go except straight ahead. Time moves in slow motion holding everyone hostage in a human conveyor belt that is laced with surprises, some pleasant, some not. Staying alert whether by foot or car is the mainstay of taking up residency in the 3rd Zone -- albeit anywhere from 20 minutes to three hours. Every day is a new day enveloped in the consistent inconsistency.

From the Carlos Guitarlos website: Following a successful run through the L.A. music scene in the 80's, which was highlighted by recording gigs with Tom Waits and The Breeders, an invite to appear on The David Letterman Show, and a stint as lead guitarist/songwriter for the notoriously raucous Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs (immortalized in the Van Halen song of the same name), Carlos endured a lengthy absence from the music scene. Throughout the 90's and into the new millennium, Carlos could be found paying his dues on the streets of San Francisco, where he has become a street-corner legend, playing guitar to earn his keep. As a result of his hard living, Carlos landed in a San Francisco hospital fighting for his life with congestive heart failure, hence, Straight from the Heart (the title track was written from his hospital bed). That experience, combined with the alcohol-related death of his friend and former band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved to be the catalyst of his recent personal turnaround and career resurgence.

The 4th annual Lummis Day will take place Sunday June 7, 2009 at three locations: Lummis Home (poetry and music from 10:30am-noon), Sycamore Grove Park (music, dance, theater and food from12:30pm-7:30pm) and Casa de Adobe (art exhibits, from 1:00pm-6:00pm).

The 4th Annual Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles will be presented on Sunday, June 7 by the Autry National Center, the Annenberg Foundation and the neighborhood councils of Northeast Los Angeles (Arroyo Seco, Historic Highland Park, Greater Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, L.A. 32 and Glassell Park.) Media sponsors are KPFK Public Radio 90.7 and Univision KMEX Channel 35. Additional sponsorship is provided by the Highland Park Heritage Trust, Jose Huizar and Council District 14, Ed Reyes and Council District 1, the Department of Recreation and Parks, the Los Angeles County Arts Commisssion, and Poets Writers Inc. through a grant it has received from the James Irvine Foundation.

The 4th annual Lummis Day will take place at three locations: Lummis Home (poetry and music from 10:30am-noon), Sycamore Grove Park (music, dance, theater and food from12:30pm-7:30pm) and Casa de Adobe (art exhibits, from 1:00pm-6:00pm).

Set for Sunday, June 7, The 4th annual Lummis Day will feature a kaleidoscopic collection of performers, including Wil-Dog (a member of L.A.'s acclaimed Ozomatli), perennial "Best Los Angeles Country Band" winners I See Hawks in L.A., virtuoso blues guitarist legend Carlos Guitarlos, poets Ruben Martinez and Suzanne Lummis, members of the Chicano comedy group Culture Clash, plus Pilipino, Native American, Mexican and Pacific Islander folk artists, poets and visual artists of various stripes and traditions.

For the community, it's a party with a purpose, a "kumbaya" for the various ethnicities and cultures that share the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods. And last year's attendance--about 9,000 people showed up--has turned it into one of the area's biggest annual events, a signature community arts and music showcase for the Northeast Los Angeles area ( including the neighborhoods of Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Cypress Park, Mount Washington, Montecito Heights, Hermon, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, and Glassell Park).

Sycamore Grove Park is located at 4702 North Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Here's a quote from Edwards' website: "I'd like to be thought of as the guy who reintroduced whatever it was that Springsteen, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello - the post-Dylan songwriters - had. And, like The Clash has shown that if you have just one person standing in front of you, you owe it to them to sweat every bit that you have in your body - I want to be the guy who, if they want to hear one more song, I am ready to give it to them. If they're still standing at the end of a 45-minute set, I feel like I've done something wrong."
